Preparing for Winter

On the list in my mind, this particular posting was not going to be posted as a "Monday Tip" for a couple of weeks yet. But then we had to scrape a quarter inch of ice/frost off our car windows yesterday morning ... And then I heard about some of the weather conditions elsewhere in the country .. so I did some mental schedule rearranging, and moved this one up a few weeks.
Yes, I fully realize that this will not at all apply to some of you. Perhaps last weeks or next weeks will ;-}.  But I also know that there are others of you whom WILL find these reminders very beneficial. This then is for you.
I originally posted a version of this back on Monday, Oct. 22nd, 2007. But hey, winter comes every single year, and for some darn reason, many of us need reminded to do these things every single year 8-/. Here's reminding you:

If you live in the Mid-west, or Eastern states, or Colorado . . . or any place where in the winter it is normal for the temp's to stay under 45 degrees, and where that 'white precipitation stuff' gets measured on the ground, then it's time to winterize your car!!!
Yes, this process does cost a little bit of $'s. BUT  NOT  DOING  SO  WILL  COST  YOU  MORE  IN  THE  LONG  RUN !!!!!
So what all is included in "winterizing your car"?  I am hereby providing a handy check list for your use (:-b) :
_ new wiper blades - the winter worthy ones!
_ windshield washer fluid - fill your reservoir in the car, and keep extra readily available. Why?
think about how often you use that stuff in the winter - driving behind spraying vehicles on the highway . . .
_ put a brush/scraper that removes ice and that 'white precipitation stuff' from your windshields NOW.
Do NOT wait till you wake up one morning and find the ground covered to try and remember where it is 8-/  and make sure it's still in condition to do a good job.
_ check the anti-freeze level in your radiator. VERY important!!!
_ make sure that both your cars heater and defroster are working!
_ carrying a "small" shovel in your trunk can prove to be very beneficial.
_ carry a container of cat litter. Remember sitting on ice and not being able to get traction?
Sprinkle cat litter on the ground right in front (and up against) all four tires - it works!
_ a warm blanket should be INSIDE your car where you can get to it.
_ also a candle, and some food bars and half full bottles of water.
_ do you have jumper cables and a flashlight in your car?
_ This is also a wise time to check the tread on your tires! Bad tread = lots of sliding

   While we're talking about winter supplies . . .
_ do you know where your winter coat is - exactly?
_ what about gloves?
_ boots?  Do they fit?
And yes boots are important!!  Whether your a fan of them or not.  (remember, this was originally posted in '07) Just last week a friend of Benson's was telling us about how a friend of hers got badly stuck in the s_ _ _ last winter and had to walk about two miles. She was wearing flip flops 8-(

Now I know a lot of you . . . and you just read through this list agreeing along the way that you should check this or that, and you made a mental note to do so . . . eventually.  Unfortunately, in your "world", eventually often finally arrives at the same time (or immediately there after) as the first s_ _ _ fall.  Do yourself a favor - ACT  NOW !!!   You'll thank yourself later for having done so ;-b

As I am very thankful I don't have to winterize my car. I am not very thankful for the extremely hot weather we are having right now! LOL 93 today! *sigh*
Good advice though. Better to do it now then later!
Blessings,
Kim

We haven't had snow yet, never do this time of year, but I've read a few blogs and they've already had it, as you said.

I love that kitty litter idea and also the warm blanket is a good one. Why are the water bottles half full, is that so they can expand if they freeze by being stored in the car?

Thank for linking up today!

OH I know how to prepare for winter and if I don't we are in big trouble.  So far I widdled my ToDo Before the First Snow down to 21!  A deep cleaning of the barn was the biggest thing we've done so far and J. helped out so it only took 2 days instead of a week!  No matter how much stuff I haul to the barn for winter storage, there's so much more to haul!

Thank you for the wonderful comments you left on my blog, and for including 'The Big Butt Club' on your list! As for this winter-to-do advice...ugh! I'm still mourning the loss of summer, I'm nowhere near ready for the beast of the frozen tundra to appear, lol.

Blessings,
Debby

These were some great advice!  I live in Illinois and this time of year is something I tend to dread...I keep telling my mother I was born in the wrong state!  hehehe!  I wish it never got below 60 here!  :)

Thanks for the reminder of what all I need to check on!  :)
